one-pot recipe ideas
One-pot recipes, also known as casseroles, are extremely popular with our neighbours to the south. As the name suggests, all the ingredients go into a single pot. Some of these dishes can even be covered in cheese and baked in the oven for even tastier results!
Baked poutine
Baked potatoes are healthier than traditional poutine fries that are fried in oil. You can make this recipe even more nutritious by adding vegetables listed in the flyer!
Pre-heat the oven to 400 °F. Peel 1 large Russet potato per person and slice it into strips 1 cm thick. Place the potatoes in a baking dish and add the oil, salt, and pepper. Bake for about 20 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the Selection poutine gravy according to the instructions on the package.
Once the potatoes have started to roast, you can add vegetables such as thinly sliced bell peppers and red onions. Add 1 ½ cup of cheese curds and the sauce. Bake for another 15 minutes. When the cheese starts to melt it’s time to serve and enjoy!
“Clear out the fridge” recipe with sausage
If you have plenty of vegetables on hand but no specific recipe in mind, a “clear out the fridge” dish is the perfect solution.
Take any vegetables you have in your fridge and dice them. Peel and dice 2 large potatoes. Slice 3 sausages into thin rounds. Chop 3 garlic cloves. Place all the ingredients you have in a deep baking dish. Add a generous drizzle of oil, cumin, couscous spice blend, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly. Bake at 400 °F for 35 minutes. Five minutes before the end of baking time, add the shredded cheese of your choice, such as Emmental or sharp cheddar.
Cheeseburger-style pasta
This delicious casserole is sure to be a hit with even your toughest critics... your kids!
Add ½ lb of ground beef and a thinly sliced onion in a pot. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for 4 minutes, then add 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour and cook for another minute. Add a can of tomato sauce and 2 cups of beef broth. Cook until none of the flour sticks to the bottom of the pot. Add ½ lb of the uncooked pasta of your choice. Cover the pot and bring to a boil. Remove the lid, stir, and cover again. Simmer on low until the pasta is cooked. For cheesy results, cover with the shredded cheese of your choice and bake in the oven for 5 minutes.
You can also add a few vegetables depending on what’s listed in the flyer or whatever you have in the fridge!
Quick taco casserole
Cook ½ lb of ground beef in a large pot. Open a can of black beans. Rinse and drain in a colander. Combine the beans with the ground beef and add a packet of taco seasoning. Cook until the meat browns. Dice a tomato and add to the pan. Crumble 4 cups of Selection corn chips and add them to the pan. A few minutes before the cooking time ends, add the shredded cheese of your choice or a cheese listed in the flyer. Cook until it melts.
Serve with whatever you have on hand such as an avocado, sour cream, or salsa!
